Automatic transmissions have become more complex than ever, and now automatic transmission fluids have to meet enormous demands. In fact, it’s no exaggeration to say that the automatic transmission is the most complex mechanical component in a car. An automatic transmission combines electrical and mechanical systems, hydraulic systems and a computer processor to smoothly shift gears and transmit engine power to the wheels.

There are three basic types of automatic transmissions used worldwide. These include the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and the most commonly used, especially in the United States, step-type transmissions. A step-type transmission consists of several major components. The pump supplies pressurized transmission fluid that is used for several purposes within the transmission. A planetary gear set applies a selected gear reduction ratio to the vehicle. A clutch (or ‘clutch pack’) is responsible for engaging and disengaging a set of gears. The torque converter connects the transmission to the engine and multiplies the torque during initial acceleration. The two turbines used by the torque converter rotate individually but are fluid coupled, allowing the engine to idle when the engine is stopped and making acceleration even smoother when shifting through gears. Finally, Mechatronics is the ‘brain’ of the transmission, a complex system of multiple ports, valves and electronics that control all transmission functions.

One of the key components in making these parts work well together in the overall system is the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Automatic transmission fluid acts as hydraulic fluid for clutch pack engagement and gear shifting. It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor and provides anti-wear performance for planetary gear sets. Even within sophisticated valve assemblies, it must flow easily from -40 degrees Celsius to over 200 degrees Celsius. The ATF must be able to precisely control the friction within the clutch pack and maintain that control throughout the change cycle. That is perhaps the most important attribute of ATF in providing lubrication to hundreds of moving parts even under conditions of high temperature and extreme pressure. Therefore, using the proper ATF is a determining factor in transmission performance and life.
