Your BMW’s expansion tank is designed to give extra room for coolant to expand and contract from temperature change. Since this component is always under constant temperature and pressure changes it often fails by cracking.

If you see any kind of coolant leak near your expansion tank replace immediately before you suffer a catastrophic failure which will leave you stranded

Your vehicles expansion tank gives coolant a space to expand and contract as it goes through temperature changes. This tank is subjected to tremendous pressure and extreme heating and cooling cycles. This of course can cause cracks which result in coolant leaks. If your expansion tank is showing signs of leaks it must be replaced immediately.
